Plans to transform Moldgreen pub into Islamic education centre have been withdrawn

PLANS to change a disused pub into a community centre have been withdrawn.

Last month an application was submitted by Birmingham-based Hasrat Sultan Bahu Trust to change the use of the Jolly Sailor in Dalton into a community hall.

Following the closure of the pub earlier this year the Trust, which operates numerous sites across the UK, proposed using the building to offer Islamic education.

But the application to transform the Broad Lane site has just been withdrawn.

The decision followed many protests and concerns over traffic and other issues around the pub.
Dalton councillor Rochelle Parchment originally hit out against the proposal amid concerns about road safety.
She said: “I am absolutely delighted it has been withdrawn.

“I was really very concerned if it did go ahead that we would face some real problems with parking and traffic on that road.

“The road is still an issue – which needs to be addressed.
“But it is a weight off our shoulders knowing that there will not be further problems caused by the proposed community hall.”

The Lib Dem politician expressed major concerns over a lack of parking facilities and that there was already a large amount of community centres within the area.

This includes DRAM centre in Rawthorpe, the New Church in Dalton, the United Reform Church, St James’ Church and Rawthorpe Community Centre.

She said that no other planning applications had been made to the council to transform the Jolly Sailor into another facility to date.
